Fear is the fourth solo studio album by Welsh musician John Cale, released on 1 October 1974 by Island Records. Fear is the first of Cale's three studio albums for Island Records, all of which were released in a period of just over a year. During this time Cale was also producing records for other artists, working on albums such as Horses by Patti Smith, one of the most influential of all proto-punk records. John Cale. Right from the start, Cale makes it clear he's not messing around on Fear. If his solo career before then had been a series of intriguing stylistic experiments, here he meshes it with an ear for his own brand of pop and rock, accessible while still clearly being himself through and through. Getting musical support from various Roxy Music veterans like Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay didn't hurt at all, and all the assorted performers do a great job carrying out Cale's vision. If John Cale can be considered a Sancho Panza to Lou Reeds sometimes Quixotic pop avatar, its only through imprecise interpretation of the obvious. True, few will contest Cales role as second fiddle, viola as it were, to Reeds presence both in regards to the Velvet Underground and in pop music culture at large. Thus, all the quirks of Cales early song writing chops are on exceptional display here, as declared by album opener Fear Is a Mans Best Friend. Cales dreamy piano melody suckers the listener in, growing more emphatic and piling alongside the rhythm section in the throbbing chorus. Cale's masterwork along with Paris 1919 his two finest solo records...not a weak track on the lot and with ENO and Manzanera at the helm of Fear it's one of the best of this gang's multitude of collaborations from that '74-'76 era...beautifully weird alchemic stuff
speaking of classic : angry yet nostalgic impressionist music *****

GUN . . . . . . . . .
Nothing to do with style: glam. (I must add four)
I bought this album because of those eyes staring me on the cover; that face sold the album. Musically; I'm on the fence. There are times where the tracks explode with Todd-Rrundgren style production but darker and more uneasy. John Cale's voice is not the best; it's kind of unremarkable. Take Todd Rundgren and mix a bit of Roger Waters and Lou Reed in there and you've got John Cale. I've listened through the LP twice and I think the opening track (fear is a mans best friend) is the strongest.

Overall- if John Cale's bony face staring into your soul makes you want to buy this record- do
An album as good as Paris 1919
and "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend"
is one of his best songs.
first press has the "palm tree" label with pink - rim matrix n° ends with A-1 U / B 1 U - with blue inner bag.
