Avalanche Bonus On the heels of her Conatus world tour, Nika Roza Danilova was offered an opportunity to perform at one of the most prestigious modern art museums in the world, NY's Guggenheim. Rather than doing her standard Zola Jesus electronic set she decided she wanted to work with a classical composer who could arrange her songs for a quartet. Alasdair Duncan Interesting to hear these stripped down versions of Nika's songs. Favorite track: Sea Talk. Flagrantly Fragrant. Versions, a collaboration with a string quartet led by J. Thirlwell, recasts some of Nika Roza Danilov's best songs in an orchestral setting. Danilova's powerful voice is still the focal point, but it's given a different cast by the neo-classical arrangements. Queens, New York, 2009: in a dark kitchen-cum-venue muraled with grimy rainbows, a young woman sat curled on the floor belting out her operatic soul to the ring of a small keyboard. In what seems today like a past life, this. When Zola Jesus' Nika Roza Danilova was approached to perform at the Guggenheim at the close of her Conatus tour, she chose Foetus' J. Thirlwell to help her arrange her songs for the Mivos Quartet. It's a fitting collaboration they're both artists with industrial music roots and a willingness to expand far beyond them. Thirlwell's versatility is well known, both with Foetus and in projects that span sound sculptures to scoring Adult Swim's Venture Brothers series. Hi_Jacker
Not what really expected. This album is sort of a remixed version of Conatus (2011), because it includes 50% of the tracks from Conatus, but in different versions (so I guess that's why it is called Versions).

The remaked tracks are in Modern Classical genre with less electronic sound, and though, I prefer Conatus. I remember when I heard Conatus first I was amazed and listened to that album for weeks and months, and now I got Versions and while listening I was like 'hey I heard that track before', so then I found out that this album was something new from techno-pop artist Zola Jesus, she simply wanted to maybe experiment or something.

So, anyway, like I said, who has Conatus, do not expect this album to be as good as that one and it includes pretty much same tracks with even same titles, but remade into Modern Classical type of music and not so hyping/banging or how to call, as the Conatus.

I don't know, maybe -4/5.
